Poem By Okuhle Esethu: Self-Betrayal

In the end,

her self-esteem dangled on a thread

of his betrayal.

But it was not entirely his fault

that she eroded as she did.

She had played a role in her own demise too:

by giving up chunks of herself

throughout the relationship,

by giving up on herself

when cracks began to surface

in the relationship,

by ceasing to put herself first

and only prioritising the relationship,

by exaggerating the effect of his love

and the relationship,

by making him feel superior

in the relationship.

From the beginning,

she betrayed herself

when she forgot to love herself.
